Project Vulcan 2.1

i know, it says part 2 but don't get caught up in the fact there is no part 1, because the good news is there is! part 2 spontaneously occurred when i found a very inspiring glass mold at a memorial day sale at the local goodwill. it's a candle holder but i am using it upside down. i'm going to do this a little different instead of waiting until the whole project is over, i want to post as i go. always open to feedback and suggestions. wanted to try to keep more of a running thread/notes about it; if thats okay with the admins.

i love volcanoes, been fascinated by them as long as i can remember. when i was a child, i dreamed of building a time machine not to go see dinosaurs but to see volcanoes. then one day i found out volcanoes are not in fact extinct and my need for a time machine became obsolete. lol.

i first poured some cores. 2 have carnelian tumbles, citrine and quartz chips and the other has amazonite tumbles, peridot, quartz and turquoise chips. been loving 2 stage pours lately. interesting effect.

next i poured a snowcapped rim of resin with selenite powder and petalite. Once that gelled, i dropped a very thin clear layer down on the protruding hub of the mold and stuck the core to it. i was hoping this would prevent the darker next layer from seeping under the core [and it worked] as i wanted light to be able to shine up through. [vulcan 1 lurking in the background]

then i start to add the metal matrix around the core. i drop a layer of brass and then a layer of aluminum chips as i slowly fill the rest of the mold. the resin has copper powder and a touch of Pearl Ex 'Mink'. i paused at a few intervals to add the metal, quartz chunks, bionized sand, pulverized obsidian, crushed lemurian, pinch of azomite and St. Helens ash. i finished pouring once the darker layer got to the top of the core. also sprinkled a little black iron oxide on top.

i left a little room in the mold so i could add a thin clear layer to seal it all up real nice like.

final: lava pool glows better than expected when lit from below; total success on that front. also once out of the mold i thought this shape will make a great sphere stand.

notes:

vital:
white layer needs to be whiter, layer thinner. [got new pearlex micropearl]
point quartz up towards the rim instead of just laying them in the sides
add some red iron oxide to metal matrix
more bio sand. try and get it to the sides so you can see the grit more
add crushed black tourmalline

non-vital:
maybe a thin clear lens layer on top(first)? the selenite mix is not very glossy.
super thin clear layer between brass and alum?

Like the warm energies of the carnelian core, neat to focus the piece on that inner core.

Made some tb lately with crushed up vanadinite on barite, its the red without the orange Smile

Would like to cast with vesuvianite, but the piece if have is so small that i need to amplify it on an sp with a coil Confused

Thanks for this cool project!

it should be a fun project.

switched it up and poured the Vulcan 1 core last night...it's gonna be stellar. shooting star or jellyfish?

Brilliant project rev! Love the precast inserts. I think it's a great idea to have it lit from below.

Can think of loads of ideas with a great mould like that. You were obviously meant to be at that sale!

I like the idea of adding little pieces of crushed carnelian in with metal layers, perhaps making it look like a river of lava is flowing down the side.....alternately, you could mix up some resin with copper powder or an orange/red dye, wait till it's gloopy and pour some down the outside to let that lava flow! (Drop some obsidian chips in as it sets too...)

Also, how wide is the insert on the finished piece? Would a TB fit in it upside down? Reason I ask is that you could pre-cast a thin clear layer in a TB mould, which has a red/orange crystal standing up in the middle. Stick that in a finished volcano, with a wee bit more clear resin to seal it in. This would still leave the cavity of the volcano deep enough, but you now have a fiery coloured crystal erupting from it!

Lit from below, the carnelian layer would glow around the erupting crystal...... just a thought!

Have fun whatever you decide! Happy pouring.

Peace (One Day)

thanks and yes i am still working through lava flow ideas. timing will be the key in this step as you pointed out.

the hub that sticks up is only about 1/2 inch from the bottom so you have to keep the insert thin. also working ideas for the erupting/emerging crystals from the crater. thanks for all the input!

Vulcan 2.2

Started with the amazonite tumble, peridot, quartz and turquoise chip core.

This time I laid a very thin clear layer first. Once gelled, a thin layer of Selenite and petalite powders and Pearlex "Micropearl". Next I 'glued' the core to the mold hub with a little clear resin.

The next layer is comprised of copper powder, black iron oxide, St. Helens ash, bionized sand, crushed lemurian, Pearlex "Mink", and crushed obsidian. As I added this layer I also added brass chips and arranged 6 ST quartz pointS around the perimeter pointed at the rim.

It was warm out and this layer fired off pretty quickly. I sprinkled amethyst ships, key shavings and pulverized green jasper before the final clear layer on the bottom.

final:

nice 2.2 much more powerful than 2.1

focusing all the ST crystals at he rim was a major factor imo

WHOA !

Now that Is quite the ice test !

(I may add the words orgonite ice test to your photos so that it shows up on google images.)

What a perfect beverage charger.

Good information about the direction of the crystal terminations.

I have always said that you are a serious orgonite maker

when you start looking at every object as a possible mold.

yeah Sєηѕєι this one was a jaw dropper when i opened the freezer. edit my pic posts at will.

should provide ample boost as a sphere stand too yeah?

I give the nod to you for this mold find in a round about way. ever since you posted about making the smart meter rings with a stainless steel dog bowl...UPSIDE DOWN...i began to look at potential 'molds' very differently; inside out upside down. i would never have found this mold otherwise.

Very cool ! I like the idea of being a sphere stand also. Lit up from the orgonite underneath. Or a crystal ball stand?

this morning it had a tiger eye skull with charoite eyes sitting on a chunk of moldivite in the crater.
