I do apologize if this is not the right section where to post this.

We hardly watch TV (perhaps a couple of hours per week?) and we use internet maybe an hour per day so our router and Sky-box are always switched off; although the very mean reason is that we do not want those "things" polluting our environment when we don't need them (above all when we sleep).

Recently we had a lot of problems with both internet and TV.
Upon calling the providers they said keeping them off was part of the problem!
We didn't tell them but they knew because they could see that they weren't always connected...(?)

We had to pay for their engineers to come and sort the problems out and we have been "advised" - again - to never switch them off: they explained with a lot of technical jargon what happens when we reboot the Sky-box and the router.

Obviously we will never keep those "gadgets" on 24/7 as we have been told but I was wondering if anybody could tell us if it is true that they get affected by being off or if it is just another of the many lies they tell us to be constantly "connected" to something/someone.

Thank you for reading my rant.

Looks like a lot of people have similar issues -- I think you should look on their forum and see if other customers can relate to your problem:

I am sorry if my post wasn't clear enough.
I didn't want to know if other people have troubles with their boxes or how to sort them out: I was trying to ask if you 'believe' that keeping them constantly switched off cause malfunction, or if it is just one of the many lies this brain-washing corporations tell us to convince us to keep their wireless gadgets on all the time.

I hope it makes sense; thank you for reading me.

Sounds like they want you to be connected to 'the matrix' at all times. I don't know about sky-box but I know modems and routers don't malfunction by being switched off - think about it this way, why would a device be designed in such a way that they would malfunction when powered down, for instance if there was a big power outage and hundreds, maybe thousands of people needed their devices serviced? Very poor business model, I don't believe it. Lies I say, LIES! Smile

Your post was 'clear'.

However, as an IT professional, I didn't give you the 'answer' you wanted because I happen to know that tech can indeed work in ways that seem counter-intuitive. Since I do not know anything about 'skybox' and 'skybox' tech, I refuse to give you a patently unresearched answer.

Do I believe They are trying to track us all the time, wherever we go, whatever we do? Pretty much, yes, I do.

Is that the question you asked?

Not exactly.

Hi there,

IT technician here.

It is a blatant lie. In IT things doesn't happen "sometimes" unless there's a serious flaw or a very strange way of working, which I would bet it's not the case with internet providers or SkyTV.

Either the tvbox goes bad every time you switch it off or it never goes bad. There's no such thing like "if you switch it off many times per week it will go bad". This is ridiculous.

Imagine Sky engineers going to every home to fix their TVbox every time they switch it off because of a myriad of reasons : chaning furniture, electrical problems in the house or neighbourhood, kids playing, cleaning, whatever.

Of course there's an 1% chance they're right, in that case their IT infraestructure (and the company) is an absolute crap and they sell flawed services and Tv boxes. I've never seen in my life such a case. But it can be.
