Here is a little guide for this community on making sure your computer is safe from viruses, worms, trojans, and spyware/malware as well as tracking cookies.

They are all FREE programs that are top rated amongst many tech sites. I will give a short explanation of each so that it is very easy. Do not worry about breaking or damaging your computer, these programs are very easy to understand and navigate. Make sure you have a WORKING anti-virus solution. I prefer Kaspersky. Keep in mind Norton and Mcaffee are very popular but they are not safe. This is because they are very big programs that integrate with your system. It basically is a virus itself. Some say Norton records what you do as well. Now if money is an issue and you can't afford Kaspersky, than I suggest AVG. It is a free program that is very popular.

First Step: Download CCleaner

After it is installed, open it up. You will see a bunch of check boxes. You can leave the defaults and click run clean. Make sure that all instances of internet explorer or firefox are closed. This will delete history and temporary files to free up space on your system. If you have tracking cookies or temp file trojans, this will delete them.

Second Step: Download Malwarebytes

After it is installed, open it up. Go to update tab and make sure the date is the current date. If not, click update. Once it is updated. Make sure everything is closed and click quick scan. This will give you a rough idea on any viruses in critical areas. If you do FULL scan, it may take up to a few hours. Keep in mind just because it comes up 0 for quick scan does not mean you are clean. Run a full scan when you get a chance.. during the night or when you are leaving.

Third Step: Download Spybot

During installation, do not have teatimer checked or the other program under it. After Spybot is installed, open it up and click update and get the latest definitions. After you have the updates and you click to update again it should say no updates available. Than click IMMUNIZATION. Run it, than when you see any red numbers, click to IMMUNIZE and you know it is finished when there is a 0 in red. After the IMMUNIZATION, go to do a scan.

Fourth Step: Download VOPT

Download the latest version. It is a small program but is the best thing you can have for defragmenting. This is my opinion but there are options in this program to speed internet and browsing. Once installed, click tools and network and check both boxes. Click apply but DO NOT RESTART. Than go to tools again and click the other button, check both boxes than RESTART. After you restart, open it back up and click DEFRAGMENTING. Go to Advanced and check the boxes there. If you have windows 7 or VISTA do not click the bottom box. Make sure its on high priority and tightly packed. Once you click ok, it is ready to defrag. DO THIS DURING THE NIGHT BECAUSE YOU CANNOT USE SYSTEM DURING USE. To start, click defragmenting and click BATCH defrag and check the drives and click scan. When it is finished Fragments and Gaps should be at 0 on the top.

This should keep you clean most of the time. If you know you still have a virus please ask me a question and I will try to help because now you would need a technician to help and that can run you 150 an hour.

I love CCleaner myself and have used it extensively to keep my old computer going. But these others are also useful. Thanks! Very Happy
