I was looking for a place to ask this question on PWM since it's not about orgonite/gifting, but it looks like the Security section is here.

So.. I needed to buy an e-book from blish.com, for a considerable price, so I figured I should back it up. Not as simple as burning a CD, I found out.. especially if you want to then copy it onto another computer if your hard drive crashes.

After I downloaded the .PDF file it took me to an option to activate the Adobe DRM software, and it didn't seem like there was any other choice if I wanted to back up the file. So there was the DRM activation and then setting up a Microsoft Passport account.. All this was a bit unsettling, but I went ahead with it.

Is there any major problem with having this DRM thing on my computer?

Thanks,
Karen

Karen,

I have had experience with this technology before, as well. I believe Adobe calls it a Digital Edition. While I can't vouch for it 100%, I trust it a lot further than Sony's misplaced exploit of surreptitiously placing "rootkits" on music consumer's computers.

The only thing I've found is that if you have multiple computers or have to re-format your system, you have to register each machine or re-register the old machine, in the latter case, to access the document again. Sad Having the Microsoft Passport thing is pretty innocuous. If you have a Hotmail account, for example, you already have the capability of establishing a Microsoft Passport. It is really just a way of implementing a single sign-on.

I haven't had any problems with these technologies, but I am pretty trusting about this type of stuff. Your mileage may vary.

If anyone has any horror stories about these types of DRM schemes, I'd like to hear them myself. Hope this helps.

Dean

Hi Dean,

Thanks a bunch!... that really helps put my mind at ease. I trust the integrity of the author of that e-book as well as the school that is using it in their curriculum, and couldn't imagine that they would steer me wrong.. but I thought that people here might know something the rest of us don't Wink

Thanks again,
Karen
