I noticed that Don Croft have made the COD film available on his web site.

So I thought that would make my fellow warriors aware about the bittorrent program which make i quick and cheap to download big files.

From http://www.bittorrent.com/introduction.html

BitTorrent is a free speech tool.

BitTorrent gives you the same freedom to publish previously enjoyed by only a select few with special equipment and lots of money. ("Freedom of the press is limited to those who own one" -- journalist A.J. Liebling.)

You have something terrific to publish -- a large music or video file, software, a game or anything else that many people would like to have. But the more popular your file becomes, the more you are punished by soaring bandwidth costs. If your file becomes phenomenally successful and a flash crowd of hundreds or thousands try to get it at once, your server simply crashes and no one gets it.

There is a solution to this vicious cycle. BitTorrent, the result of over two years of intensive development, is a simple and free software product that addresses all of these problems.

The key to scaleable and robust distribution is cooperation. With BitTorrent, those who get your file tap into their upload capacity to give the file to others at the same time. Those that provide the most to others get the best treatment in return. ("Give and ye shall receive!")

Cooperative distribution can grow almost without limit, because each new participant brings not only demand, but also supply. Instead of a vicious cycle, popularity creates a virtuous circle. And because each new participant brings new resources to the distribution, you get limitless scalability for a nearly fixed cost.

BitTorrent is not just a concept, but has an easy-to-use implementation capable of swarming downloads across unreliable networks. BitTorrent has been embraced by numerous publishers to distribute to millions of users.

With BitTorrent free speech no longer has a high price.

Thanks! This is exactly what I've been trying to figure out lately.. how to use a Bittorrent client securely, or is that a contradiction?

I looked into several clients, including uTorrent, and from what I gathered, folks are using routers for firewalls, not simply software firewalls as I'm using. I'm confident about going online using Firefox with ZoneAlarm, but am not confident to venture out into the wild and wooly world of file sharing.

Any suggestions?

Karen

While we are on the subject of bit torrent. This is a link to a site for searching .torrent files and an article on their site about the 10 dumbest things Bush said in 2004.

I think I need to open a topic about firewalls and their purpose in the scheme of security. As far as bittorrent goes, it is as secure as the file you are sharing, the only real vulnerability is if you end up downloading a virus instead of the file you wanted. But the same is true with all peer to peer clients. AFAIK, there are no security vulnerabilities in the software itself that can compromise your privacy or let someone run code you aren't aware of.

Bit torrent is better than Kazaa, or Napster, or Bearshare, or Limewire etc. becasue you only share the torrent file that is open, no other files or folders are shared. No one can get your "file list" or send you messages like "click here to see my nude photos on the farm" (the internet is full of sickos)

I have been using bittorrent for a long time now, and you get used to seeing what files are dodgy and what is ok, by not only who is listing the file but also the way they have uploaded it. most compressed files are password protected, there for you have to go to a website to get passwords!!!! eg virus or trojans.

I have only had one virus from using this method of peer to peer, an AVG found it before download finished.
its also really hard for the "hidden big brother" to see what you are downloading as its all in very small packets of incripted data unlike when I was using limewire which is nothing more that a haven for viruses and the like.

Ben.
