While many people try to eat healthy, it can be a challenge. Add on top of this, the recent heat wave in many parts of the American North East, the horrible droughts in Oklahoma and Texas that extend up into Kansas and Nebraska. Food is a precious resource and it is one of the most overlooked aspects of personal security. The question is how much of a role food should play? Some will think that this is about saving food for later. It is not. It is about getting food later, and more importantly about being able to get food for later.

Many people like me, grew up with a small garden. The food grown in these gardens was used to supplement what we buy at the local market. Today, we have largely moved away from gardening as a way of life. We have as a society have allowed large corporations to control our food. We are allowing these corporations to provide for us, food at inflated prices, from sources that may or may not be providing us quality food. Not to mention the use of dangerous poisons and genetically modified plants. While it would be nice for us to all be able to spend the time and money to raise our own food, that is not practical.

We can change this... It will take time. It will take effort, but it can be done.

The first step is to learn. We must all take time to learn about what food we eat and where it comes from. We need to take the time to learn about what products we consume affects our bodies.

The next step is to figure out ways we can change the process. We as individuals can effect change. Perhaps not on a grand scale, but more importantly in our own lives. This starts again with learning. Learning how to keep some small plants and learning about your local farmers markets. Buying food from our friends and neighbors, and other small farmers helps them out, and gives you access to food that is better tasting and better for you.

Why have I mentioned this? Because it is our own personal responsibility to take care of ourselves. What happens if we have a massive crop failure? Are you going to be dependent on someone else to take care of you and your family? It takes baby steps, that over time, will seem like giant leaps in personal security.
