I was wondering if you guys can help me with identifying this pink gemstone? I got it as a gift from someone with the challenge to identify it. Very Happy I only have two clues:

1.It is from Africa.

2.Supposedly it's worth more than 35 bucks. (yes, that little piece)

I've already done plenty of research but the ones I that I thought were a match - Rubellite (pink Tourmaline) and pink sapphire - were not correct, according to him. Thanks for your input! Smile

Very difficult to say from a photo, could be a beryl or spinel maybe, both come in many colors.

Yes, I considered those two as well but I don't think that matches the price....

Gemmy rose quartz? It does rarely come in crystals- usually very expensive.

Rose quartz pics: https://www.google.com/search?q=rose+quartz+crystal+africa&tbm=isch&tb o=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=oPj1VP3yEpLwoATrzoLQDg&ved=0CDIQ7Ak&biw=1280&b ih=601

This link for gemmy rhodochrosite feels more like it: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Pink-crystals/408388122594862

There's a thumbnail sized piece near the bottom of the page that seems to match the look and feel pretty closely.

Thanks for your feedback Ruth! Smile I have come across these too....will let you know if it is among them. I doubt rose quartz because that shouldn't be so expensive, right?

Gemmy rose quartz is both rare and expensive. It's so rare that many people don't even realize that rose quartz comes in crystal form.

I think the rhodochrosite feels closer, though. Hardness might tell you. Will it scratch glass?

You were right about the rhodochrosite!! Very Happy When I told him he said "Almost perfect! But there are two types" So I researched and Rhodochrosite comes in Rhombohedron-shape as well as Scalenohedron shape. It's the latter that we're dealing with here and apparently this shape is quite rare and precious. The locality should be south Africa then.

Of course the person had to give me another task. Does anyone know what the spiritual or energetic properties of the Rhodochrosite scalenohedron is? What actually makes it so special? I'm really quite fascinated by this piece now...

Ok I can answer it myself now. The rhodochrosite is supposed to enhance concentration, communication, vitality, lust, enthusiasm and love of adventure. It also has many healing properties, too many to list. Its associated with the heart chakra as well as the sacral chakra. The scalenohedron shape makes it more focused.
